So you’ve taken down the Christmas decorations, you’ve made your New Year’s resolutions; broken them already and you’re now settling yourself into the gloom that is January. Depressing isn’t it? But don’t despair, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so it’s time to start thinking about romance, hearts and flowers and all that malarkey. Not in the mood? I suggest you get in the mood, your competitors will be!

Valentine’s Day is a pretty hectic time for email marketers. If you are a hotel, restaurant, florist, jewellery retailer, gift delivery company etc, then now is the time to be enticing people to purchase that weekend break, gourmet dinner for two, that teddy bear with the chocolates that always seems to materialise at this time of year! In all seriousness, there is a lot of business to be had in the lead up to Valentine’s Day so you should be designing your email campaigns now to maximise on it. Here are some things to think about:

Most Valentine’s Day shopping is done on-line from the office during the week. Think about this when you are timing your email send out.

Think about the design of your email and make sure that people who click on links in your email are taken to well designed landing pages that are promoting your best Valentine’s offers.

Start emailing now and then create a sense of urgency. Maybe email once a week or even daily. Countdown the days to the 14th February and create that panic in men all over the UK to get their finger out and buy their partner something fabulous!

Maybe use MMS/SMS campaigns in conjunction with your email marketing to keep your promotions in front of your customers’ minds.

Get really clever and do some remarketing. Look at abandoned sales carts and suggest other products that they might be interested in.

Even if you do not provide Valentine products or services you can still get in on the act and do special offers to coincide with the date. It’s all about sharing the love!

Don’t forget social media. Use Facebook and Twitter to further engage your audience and link in with your email campaign

Don’t forget that staying in is the new going out. It won’t be long before you’ll start hearing Matthew Macfadyen’s silky smooth voice over for the M&S Meal deals for £10 TV adverts saying that we can enjoy all the pleasures of Valentine’s Day in the comfort of our own homes with a romantic M&S meal for two. Many cash strapped Brits will be celebrating Valentine’s Day indoors so if you have a promotion that suits this then you need to be telling your customers now.

OK, you’ve been told…
