Optimize Your Website for Search Engines

Boosting your site’s organic (unpaid) rating in search engine results is by far the best way to promote your website. For example, if your company sells fleece socks, you want to employ effective SEO tactics so that your company will show up in the first page of results when the consumer types slippers in to the search box. Or if they try searching socks. Or warm feet. Research shows that most people won’t make it past the second page of search results, so if you’re not in those results, you’re losing business. The basic principles of SEO are simple- follow these ten tips to get your page ranking higher fast.

1. Name Your Site Obviously
Though you want a unique and memorable brand name, your website name needs to be obvious. If you sell socks, socks should be right there in the title.

2. Pick a Good Domain
Just like your site name should be obvious, so should your domain name. Your business name should be right in the domain name, and if possible, your most popular key word.

3. Forget About Underscores
In your URLs, you aren’t allowed to use spaces. But you also shouldn’t use underscores. When a crawler finds a phrase that is strung together with underscores, it automatically reads it as one word and loses all that hard keyword research you’ve done. Instead, use dashes so the crawlers can differentiate the words in your URLs.

4. Keyword Research
Keeping on top of the keywords that your customers are finding you by is imperative to good SEO. Brainstorm all of the keywords that your audience might use to find you, and make sure they are in your keyword list. Continually update this by using an analytic service to find out what keywords are bringing your customers to your website.

5. Meta Tags
There are a few different types of meta tags that you should be using in your website. First, the title meta tag. This is a 6-10 word description of your site that appears in the site title when the search engines crawl your site for keywords. Always use your most popular keywords in this meta tag! The description meta tag gives you 170 character for a keyword rich description of your site.

6. Strong and Updated Content
Content is the most important element of SEO. It should be well and tightly written, keyword rich and constantly updated. Search engines take all this in to account when searching through websites. To help the crawlers along, include a keyword in the first and last line of your content.

7. Links
Your website should contain links to other websites, information sources or blogs. These links will add value for your viewer and boost your ranking.

8. Online Presence
Just like links on to your website improve your ranking, links back to your website also improve your ranking and establish you as an industry expert. Comment on blogs. Do link exchanges with others. Use social media. Any way to link back to your website is helpful!

9. Images
Only use images that add value to your website, and make sure to tag them properly when you use them. Title them and give them descriptions that utilize your site’s keywords and messaging.

10. Have a XML Site map
When a crawler is going through your website, it is looking for all of your content to decide how you will rank in the search engine. A XML site map makes it easy for a crawler to find all the great content that is on your site, instead of it only being able to find your index page. So use Google Site maps to build one and watch your ranking improve!
