If you want to find yourself on top of Google, Overture, Yahoo, or any of the other top search engines, then you will have to get focused and master a few important marketing strategies that will take you to the top. If you are wondering where to start, let me suggest one strategy that is an absolute must because it will almost guarantee your success online. That strategy is marketing with a focused keyword strategy.

I do not want to insult your intelligence, but I do want to make sure we are on the same page when we talk about keywords. A simple definition for a keyword is a word or phrase that someone will enter into a search engine when they want to get information on a particular topic. It should be your goal to find keywords that are used fairly frequently in your niche. Once you define the most relevant keywords you can optimize your website, blog, or a simple article using these words to increase your chance of to the top of the search engines.

It is not always easy to know the exact keywords that will get the most targeted prospects to your business site. There is however a method that will help you zero in on the most popular and competitive keywords.

The first thing that you must do is develop a list of 4-6 keywords that are pertinent to the business or opportunity that you are promoting. Define in your own mind what words someone will use when they are looking for a business or product that you are promoting. Try to think of words or phrases that will narrow down what your product or business does or is.

You should choose keywords that are based on relevance. You don’t want general words like business or marketing. If you choose these keywords you will not rank well because they are used frequently enough to make them competitive in the search engines. In other words everybody is using them and you will get lost in the crowd if you choose them as one of your relevant keywords. Thus you must choose less competitive keywords that specifically relate to your business.

To help you in the process you will want to find a quality keyword tool. There are many good ones to be found online such as the one that Google offers its users free of charge. Always remember when you are searching out a keyword that the words that get the highest volume of traffic are the most competitive. The ones that get no volume will not help you either. You want to search for the words somewhere in the middle. Very often in this process your choices may be hit and miss. The more you work with it, the better choices you will make.

Once you have determined the best keywords and keyword phrases that are the most relevant to your product or business, the next step is to incorporate them into your website, blog, advertisements, and articles. If you use the fairly competitive and relevant keywords, you will find over time that you are coming up higher and higher on the search engines as you refine the process.
