Making More Money With Email Marketing

Improving your email open rates is one of the best things you can do, because it’s a simple fact that if your emails aren’t being opened, they’re not being read. And if they’re not being read, they can’t sell anything, which is the whole point of sending emails in the first place.

Improving email open rates

When it comes to getting more people to open your emails you need to think very much like a direct response copywriter, and any decent direct response copywriter will tell you one of the most important things to know about when it comes to getting a response is human psychology. You don’t need to have a degree in it, or start studying thick books filled with boring words and complicated concepts. But you do need a measure of understanding of what makes people tick.

Psychology is a fascinating subject, and filled with strange facts. For instance, one of the strangest things about human psychology is that people will tend to work harder to keep something they already have than they will to get something they don’t have yet. In other words, fear of loss is stronger than excitement at the possibility of gain, or fear of pain is stronger than excitement at the possibility of pleasure.

Getting People to Respond

However, when it comes to email marketing, this isn’t usually the case. You’ll find people will respond to something positive much more than they will to something negative. This is another common factor in direct response marketing, and it means you should write email subject lines talking about gaining something positive rather than avoiding something negative. You should do this even if your product really is about avoiding something negative.

So if you’re selling a product which solves skin problems, you could have two subject lines:

1. Make you skin glow with beauty
2. How to avoid having bad skin

You would think the second one would get a better open rate, because it’s all about avoiding pain. But you’ll find in most cases the first will get a better open rate (and probably sell more).

This may seem like a minor point, but in reality it will make you a lot more money, and it’s something worth thinking about every time you send an email. In the end it’s all about making sales, and that’s the real thing to concentrate on. And of course you have to make sure you write great content for your emails. But you always have to remember the more people open your mails the more likely you are to sell more – and that’s what it’s all about in the end.
