Now I know that everyone seems to think that Google+ isn’t going anywhere fast but it’s still only a baby when it comes to social media platforms. but getting the most out of SEO on Google+ really is worth it.

I think where most people go wrong is that they have to think differently when using it. You have to take a different strategy when using it.

Here’s how:

Because Google+ now adds everything to its main search you would be silly not to at least take a look at using G+ in your marketing mix because what I am about to reveal to you will increase the visibility of your posts and give your marketing strategy a boost like never before

Remember to have all your posts set to ‘public’ now I know this sounds like a bit of a no brainer but trust me this really does work. The reason it works is its telling Google to index all your posts in the main search engine. If you restrict this you will not appear in the main search as well as you should.

Google+ is getting better when it comes to URL shorteners but it’s still not great. What I tend to do is use the ‘add a link’ icon, it looks like a chain link in the bottom right hand corner of the content box. Also using a link directly from your content will help with all sorts of other great things such as cross referencing with any +1’s you might gain from other users. Think of it as a URL sharing system and you won’t go far wrong.

Just like Facebook you can add a person’s name to your comment and this is really easy. Anyone you are connected to when you add a + and then begin to type a name it will automatically come up, this can also form a list. This is a fantastic way of sharing your comments and engaging with other users. If you can’t see this functionality check your privacy settings.

Remember the name of the game here is to engage and share so write great content and share it with as many people as possible. This again also helps in the main search. Adding people to your circles will also extend your reach.

Just like the other social media platforms make sure you have a +1 button on all your posts. If you look to the left of this post you will see a string of them and this helps people share your content. Go ahead and click some of them and you will see how they work.

I know you are sick of hearing me say this… but I will say it again… FILL OUT YOUR PROFILE. Most people have a pitiful excuse for a profile and worse still no photo. If I can have my ugly mug all over the place then so can you. How many times have you searched for someone only to find a profile with no photo, yep how infuriating is it when you want to do business with someone and you can’t decide if it’s the right person or not? Take all that away with a photo. Remember the more ‘open’ you are the more you will reap the rewards.

Something I have started doing is clicking on the ‘Email people not using Google Plus’ links to the side of the main feed. I do this with some of my posts but not all to give people a feel of what I can offer. It’s great that you can still share your content with people who are not using Google+ yet. You never know it might just inspire them to have a go. Remember use it sparingly as you don’t want to annoy people who don’t want to use social platforms.

Remember to take part in the community. The more you interact the more you will get out of it. This can also affect your relevance and rankings in the main search so give this some serious consideration.

It takes time to build up any social media presence but if you do it right and follow some if not all of the above steps you will be well on your way. Using G+ to extend the reach of your business is really easy, and remember, you can always ask questions of the people who are using Google+ they are a friendly lot.

I would be really interested to hear how you use Google Plus, or any other Social Media Platform, and if it has helped in your quest for SEO stardom?
