Build a List

Everyone tells you that the gold is in the list. They tell you that you can make oodles and oodles of money from your list.

What List? Where do I find this list? How can I build my own list?

Great questions and frankly there are not a lot of answers available that work.

In order to build a list you have to have a system in place. You can purchase lists but they normally will not be specific to the product or service that you are offering. If there were such a list that was perfect for your product you will pay dearly for it. Remember an arm and a leg? Well that’s what the use of a targeted list will cost you. Whoever may have this list has already done what you want to do and will not want to part with the profits that the list is generating for them.

So we are back to how to build your own list. The basics of a list generation system are as follows:

  1. Traffic Generation
  2. Lead Capture Page
  3. Lead Capture Forms
  4. Autoresponder Follow Up System
  5. Follow Up Message Campaign

These are the basic parts of a system and they will need to be broken down into parts even further to make them effective. I also left the most obvious item off the list and that is a product or service.

Traffic Generation

Of all of the parts to list building the traffic is either the hardest or the most expensive part of the equation. You see you can build organic traffic by building a website and building organic traffic. You can also buy traffic by using a variety of sources. The most popular is a service like Google Ad Words.

Lead Capture Page

The second part to the list building equation is to have a lead capture page. This page must first capture the interest of the visitor in order to eventually capture the information that you want. The content of your web page must be compelling enough for your visitor to fill out a form to get more information. This means that you need to be able to give them just enough to keep reading but not enough for them to not need to request more.

Lead Capture Forms

This is possibly the easiest part of the process. It is just a matter of having a form on the page for someone to request more information. The form should have the ability to have the information automatically added to a follow up system so you do not have to manually add this information.

Autoresponder Follow Up System

The name autoresponder has always seemed to be misnamed. It does have the ability to “auto” respond in some cases and in the case of someone adding there name to your form this is exactly what it will do. In many cases the autoresponder is used to initiate a first contact so in this case it is not an autoresponder. It does automatically follow up if you have setup a number of follow up messages.

Follow Up Message Campaign

Your Follow up campaign is a series of messages that are written to educate and persuade your list to do something. It is not always to purchase a product although this is usually the primary reason. If your ultimate goal is to have a product purchased then you must convince the person reading your message that your product is going to solve an issue that they are having. When your reader first opens your email they will be asking themselves “What’s in it for me?” and “How will I benefit?” Since you are aware of this it makes sense to have your biggest customer benefits in your headline and in the immediate copy of the first paragraphs.

Use a Time Sensitive Close

After you have written about all of the features that your product has and how it will undoubtedly change the reader’s life you will still need to close them on the product or service. People have a tendency to put things off and this is why you must give them a reason to respond now. If you are counting on later then get used to a low response. It is just human nature so you must include a reason for your reader to do it now. If you make your offer time sensitive then you are telling them that there is no later and you can nudge or sometimes push them in the right direction.
