Basic Search Engine Optimization 101

Search engines, SEO, search systems, search directories…it’s enough to make you search for some Aspirin!

This article outlines the basics of search engine optimization and is simply to guide you in the proper direction, it is by no means a detailed blueprint for SEO.

The basics of search engine optimization is surprisingly basic. Sometimes just a few simple changes to your website can make an amazing difference in your website’s ranking in the search results. Always remember to keep all that you do on the Internet to promote your website all white, stay away from black hat SEO tricks as they will not benefit you in the long-term.

Step 1- Do your keyword research first: In order to rank high in the search engines you need to determine for what term or terms you want to rank for in a search engine search result.

What this means is you must decide which keywords or key phrases you wish to rank for. Let me point out that this is not something you want to guess at as you will pick all the WRONG keywords and key phrases. In other words, you’re selling wobbly widgets and you want people to know you’re selling them – perhaps your first keyword should be “wobbly widgets”. Doing keyword research is the only way to select the right keywords for you to target.

Step 2 – Be sure your web pages are readable: To be sure your site appears in the search engines, you need to create pages that not only humans can read but pages that the search engines spiders can indeed read as well. Believe it or not there are millions of pages currently on the Internet that CANNOT be read by the search engines. And these people wonder why their website cannot be found on the web.

Step 3 – Keywords are key: Be sure your pages are key-worded. Having pages that are readable by the search engines is only the beginning. You also need to place keywords into your pages in all the right places and in the correct format.

Step 4 – Allow the search engines to find you: Once your web pages are complete as per the above SEO tips, you then need to let the search engines know where those pages are so that they will include YOUR pages in their indexes and directories. This sometimes can be a daunting task. Placing a site map on your website can be one helpful step to aid in accomplishing this.

Step 5 – Start getting some link juice: This is where you get other websites on the Internet to link back to you. Sometimes you can do what is known as reciprocal linking, this is where you place a link pointing to another website and that website places a link pointing back to your website. There are many other various ways to get link juice, such as blogs, forums, article directories, etc. This is a subject all its own which I will cover in another article.

The strategies you’ve just read above are the beginning basics to search engine optimization otherwise known as SEO.
