5 Ways to Get People to Read Your Newsletters

As a business owner, you know how important it is to keep in regular touch with your contacts. One of the best ways of doing this is via email marketing. It not only keeps your name in front of your contacts but it’s also a way of sharing your knowledge and expertise.

But let’s face it, we all receive masses of emails a day. So to stop your email getting buried amongst the junk mail, how can you grab people’s attention when your newsletter lands in their inbox?

Well, here are 5 top tips to get people to read your email newsletter.

Eye-catching subject. The best way of encouraging people to open your newsletter is to have an attention grabbing subject header. So rather than put “My Company Newsletter” in the subject line, why not take inspiration from one of the topics mentioned and use that instead. For example, if I was putting this article in a newsletter then I could have a subject header that says “Do you want to know 5 ways to get people to read your newsletters?”.

Get personal. By adding the recipient’s name in the subject header, the email will catch their eye when it appears in their inbox. Also, because it has their name in the email then it’s less likely to end up in the junk folder. By personalizing the message, you are helping to build a relationship between you and the recipient.

Keep it simple. When choosing or designing a template for your newsletter, it’s a good idea to have a simple layout. Go with either a single column design or one with a sidebar, and put your logo or image at the top so people can instantly see who the message is from. When creating the main body of the newsletter, split it into sections with headers so your readers can quickly scan down the content to see what they want to read. It’s also a good idea to add a short summary of the content at the beginning of the newsletter, perhaps with links to the headers of the main sections.

Don’t overload readers! If your newsletter is made up of long articles then don’t add them all into the main body of the email. Most people won’t have the time to read through great blocks of text which means that they will just delete the email. Just have a header title and summary of the article, and then add a link to the main article on your website. This means that your readers can quickly scan which articles they’re interested in and can click on those ones that they want to take the time to read.

Don’t add content as an image. A big mistake that some people make is to put the whole of their newsletter content into one big image. This can seem like a good idea if you want to include a lot of images and ensure that your layout looks consistent in all email browsers. However, most email browsers have images switched off by default so all your recipients see when they open the email is a blank box! That means that a lot of people will delete the email rather than download the image to see what it says.

Email marketing is great way to keep in touch and build relationships with your contacts. If done correctly, you can raise the profile of your brand and promote yourself as an expert in your field. This means that your contacts are more likely to go to you when they’re ready to buy your services or products.
